NEWSIES: The Broadway Musical

Based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, this new Disney musical tells the story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who dreams of a life as an artist away from the big city. After publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices at the newsboys’ expense, Kelly and his fellow newsies take action. With help from the beautiful female reporter Katherine Plumber, all of New York City soon recognizes the power of “the little man.”

AUDITION INFORMATION

Thank you for considering auditioning for Lyric’s production of Newsies the Broadway Musical. We are excited for the chance to experience so much talent in our community during the audition process. The artistic team is striving to cast the right person for the role, regardless of gender, race, age, ethnicity, or body type. We are also looking to build a cast of kind-hearted, supportive, hardworking humans that have the same desire to tell this story as we do. This story is primarily told through singing and dancing so we encourage you to be thoughtful about telling the story through your movement and vocal auditions. We know how nerve wracking auditioning can be, as many of us have stood on both sides of the table! We will be attending auditions with a gracious attitude, a kind heart and an open mind and we hope you will do the same.

IMPORTANT DATES AND TIMES

Kickoff

Wednesday 8/21 at 6:30 PM. We invite you to join us to meet the team and learn a little more about the show before auditions. All info will also be available below on the website. You will be able to sign up for your preferred audition date at the kickoff or via the link on the website that will be accessible the same evening.

Auditions

Sunday 8/25: Registration @ 12 PM, Auditions @ 12:30 PM
Monday 8/26, Tuesday 8/27, Wednesday 8/28: Registration @ 5:30 PM, Auditions @ 6 PM

Callbacks

Callbacks will be held on Thursday 8/29 in the evening. Only certain auditioners for certain roles will be called back. If you do not receive a callback, it does not mean you were not cast in the show, only that the team did not need to see you in the callback setting. Callbacks will include scenework and additional vocal selections.

Casting

Casting calls will begin at 4 PM on Friday 8/30. If we are offering you a role in Newsies, we will need to speak to you directly. If the actor is under the age of 18 years old, we will also need to speak with a parent or guardian. If we are unable to offer you a role, you will receive an email on Friday 8/30.

Movement

There will be a movement workshop that will also serve as your movement audition. Everyone will be required to participate in the jazz part of the workshop/audition, and there are two optional movement sections. The first optional section includes movement on your knees. The second optional section is a tap audition. Note: We ask that you be warmed up physically before your dance workshop.

• Auditionees will be asked to learn an additional choreographed sequence in the workshop. We will be working in groups, (NOT individually!) with a process-oriented, workshop-type atmosphere. Be ready to be receptive, be honest and have fun!

There will also be a music workshop that will provide you a chance to review the music selections before your individual audition.

• If you have a specific role in mind we recommend you sing the primary song assigned to them below. If you aren’t auditioning for a specific role, select the song that best showcases your voice and storytelling ability.
